I, as with most developers, started my career in programming by consuming a lot of content in different forms ranging from reading books, tutorials blog posts to watching hours of videos on various learning platforms. This was very (and still is very much) helpful in moulding and building up my skillset.
However as time went by, I found myself getting easily tired of long blog posts and lengthy tutorial videos. At a point, I did not bother to read any post on Medium that was more than 5 minutes. I became frustrated whenever I came across long posts and would read just the first and last paragraphs at best to get an idea of what the post was about but this came at a cost of missing out on some information somewhere in between.
I would like to believe that I am not alone in this boat - one where conciseness is highly appreciated. So in typical programmer style, I decided to do something about it. I built Tipz. π
What is Tipz?
I would consider Tipz to be a beautifully designed and crafted iOS app where you can get the TL;DRs of (rather long) tech tutorial blog posts and videos alike.
Some of the features Tipz boasts of include:
- Select categories of interest.
- Get notifications when new tips are added.
- Search for what you want to learn.
- Star tips you find helpful so you can always come back to it.
- Add tip which are made publicly available after validation.
- No sign up/sign in process. No subscription fees. None of that!
Needless to say that there is DEFINITELY a place for robust and extensive tutorials as they can come in very handy in not only knowing what to do but why to do what you did. Hence, Tipz is not designed to be a replacement but rather an augment.
In this premier The Story Behind series, I will be covering my experience of developing Tipz and sharing some of the challenges I encountered and how I was able to overcome them (or go around them as the case may be π).
Tipz is currently only available on iOS and is in beta testing. I would appreciate if you would like to join the beta.
